Midwives play an important role in advising, assisting and supporting pregnant women to quit smoking for the health of their baby by:
- Asking about smoking status
- Assessing nicotine dependence and readiness to change
- Advising pregnant women and their partners to quit smoking
- Assisting with information about methods to support quitting
- Arranging follow up, including referral to Quitline
Smoking during pregnancy can lead to numerous complications for the baby
